Daniel Land & The Modern Painters

Daniel Land & The Modern Painters debut album "Love Songs For The Chemical Generation LP" will be released as a limited edition CD on Monday 2nd November, on Saint Cecilia Records. The band will be marking the release with a series of performances, including a slot supporting The Tamborines at Club AC30 on Tuesday 3rd November.

Two years in the making, the album features twelve tracks and features contributions from Ulrich Schnauss and Mark Peters (Engineers), who lend their production skills to the tracks “Within The Boundaries” and “Benjamin’s Room”, initially released as a Sonic Cathedral 7” single last October, and which appear here for the first time on a Daniel Land & The Modern Painters CD.

The band was formed in Manchester three years ago by songwriter and 4AD obsessive Daniel Land after witnessing a DJ set by German electronica genius Ulrich Schnauss. Critically acclaimed since then by Radio 1 (“They’re the kind of band that John Peel would have loved”) and the NME (“Sounds like Slowdive reimagined by Phil Spector”) among many others, the band’s increasingly diverse sound has been described as sounding like “What might have happened if Paul Simon had discovered ambient, rather than African music, in the 1980’s”.

Despite being frequently described as “shoegaze”, the band themselves are not quite so confident in using that tag alone to describe their sound. "We don't really know what these songs are anymore", says Daniel, venturing terms such as “ambient country” and “psychedelic pop” with a sigh and an admission that the description hasn’t just settled yet. “There’s a shoegazey, dream-pop element to it, but also a lot of alt-country in there too.

“If I had to definite it, I say that what sets us apart from a lot of other ‘shoegaze’ bands is this interesting tension in our songs - the fact that we try to find the middle ground between simple, honest songwriting - the kind of songs written by The Blue Nile or Mojave 3 for example – or something that’s totally abstract and completely blurry. The attention to detail is there, the textures and so on, but there’s always a part of you that want to write the perfect pop song as well. That’s what this record is about”.
